This is a tasty twist on the classic oatmeal breakfast. It’s like basic oatmeal, except you slice up a banana and put it in the cold pot with the water before you apply heat. Then, as you boil the water, the banana gets cooked—like Bananas Foster in New Orleans, just missing the rum, banana liqueur, and dazzling tableside flambé.
I got the idea for this recipe from Patrick Lemieux, husband of 2016 gold-medal triathlon champ Gwen Jorgensen. She mentioned this as her favorite breakfast in a live social-media event in 2017. I modified the recipe a bit, and gave it the silly name.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup of oatmeal
- A banana (I like the ripe ones)
- Raisins (optional)
- 1 cup of water

Instructions
- Peel and slice the banana into slim discs
- Put the sliced banana in a pot
- Pour the water into the pot
- Optional: add a handful of raisins to the pot (I cut each raisin in half so they add more sweetness)
- Bring the water, banana, and raisins to a boil
- Add the oatmeal to the pot when boiling and stir to blend
- Cook for the amount of time needed for your oatmeal (instant oatmeal usually needs to boil for 1 minute, whole rolled oats may need 10 minutes or longer at medium-low heat)
- Turn off heat at required time, and put lid on the pot for 2 minutes.
- Put in a bowl and enjoy!
Additional Notes
Feel free to adjust to your liking. For example, use 1/2 cup of water and 1/2 cup of milk. Add brown sugar. Add cinnamon. Throw in a pinch of salt, etc.
